A Moment of Your Time

Communication can occur in a variety of mediums, each with their own unique qualities that serve a specific purpose. Everyone has different responses to each of these mediums and will find one more effective than the other based on personal preference. As such, advertisers design their messages in such a way that a large percentage of the demographic has a common factor that can be appealed to.

From my point of view, visual communication is the most powerful and effective way to deliver a message. According to MIT, a study found that the human brain can process an image in as fast as 13 milliseconds. This miniscule amount of time is all that is needed to successfully deliver a message, make a statement, or trigger a memory when dealing with images.

With other forms of communication, a larger amount of focus is required. If the message is literary, time is needed to read and then process the message in question. With auditory communication, the audio has to be clear and uninterrupted to be effectively delivered.

Through a blend of different communication styles, name brands and large corporations advertise their products in order to outperform their respective competitors. Amazon, though an obvious choice, has made itself an invaluable companion to the modern civilian. By expanding from a simple online bookseller to the online one-stop marketplace, and advertising themselves as such every step of the way, they maximized on their potential. Jeff Bezos has decided to step down as CEO of Amazon which will send the company into a different chapter that will be watched with interest.

Elon Musk is an individual that marketed and advertised himself concurrently with his company Tesla Inc. as well as his exploration project, SpaceX. However his methods were less traditional and focused more on IP to stay connected with the consumers of his media and content. Examples would be keeping current with what is considered "internet culture" or branching into unexpected areas such as branding their own tequila. Though an unorthodox method, it has proven extremely effective.

Last but not least, Apple is a tech giant that has marketed themselves as less of a product and more of a lifestyle. As such, their marketing is simultaneously inviting new customers as well as encouraging current consumers to remain with the brand. They appeal to the image that people see of themselves and make it appear as if Apple products are an essential characteristic of this persona.
